It's so crazy looking but is a real testament to the engineering talent / eccentricity at White. It reminds me of those Pachinko machines we heard about.
By the late 60's car styling had become very hard edged and still quite creative inside and out. Fed Reg's had not yet started to homogenize design so things like the 1966 Thunderbird were aggressive and flamboyant.
For some reason I really like the "tail fin" speed form leading up to the hand wheel.

A little update on sewing with the Fotomatic; it is very sure footed, it starts thru most anything without help. I have no idea why this particular machine is different than the others because let's face it... it is another Japanese machine from the 60's. Regardless it just goes thru my light weight leather without a fault. A strange thing does occur occasionally, the bobbin thread jumps out of the diagonal slot , when this happens the everything goes out of whack but from the top things look OK so you need to catch this early. This may not be a 4400 problem, just a bobbin case problem?

Hi Tom,
ReplyDeleteYour Fotomatic is a gorgeous sewing machine. I love, love the royal blue colour. What do your stitches look like on the bottom side? Is it possible the bobbin tension screw needs a little tightening? Or perhaps the bobbin is inserted backyards. The bobbin thread should pull off the bobbin counter clockwise.
does anyone know what size needle fits the Fotomatic 4400?
ReplyDeleteHi, they take the standard needle for all domestic machines. You must pay attention to the allignment: the groove in the needle always aims away from the bobbin case.

Hi Tom! I just pulled out my Morse Photomatic Auto Zig Zag machine. I'm going to have it serviced and put it back in service! I've been using an Elna 1010 my daughters gave me 10 years ago. I like it fine but I'm doing quilting now and I think my old machine just might be better for that. For sure it's stronger, sturdier and it used to sew like a dream. Hope I can find a good place to service the old lady! I bought it new around 1972 to make baby clothes.
ReplyDeleteThat is so great, the old machine comes around again. It's a little tricky to switch machines but it also makes you learn and think about how they function; all for the better.
DeleteAny old timer can give these things a tune-up, good luck!
I want one of these so badly, I can scarcely stand it. I have a Morse 7200, purchased new in 1972 and that machine has been a real work horse. I think your 4400 is just stunning to look at. I'm sure it hums, just like a Toyota.
ReplyDeleteThey are more rare than I originally thought, I haven't seen many of them either.
DeleteI could let this one go, make me an offer.
Do you still have this machine? Any chance you would pop the top off and take some detailed photos for me so I can compare with the one I'm trying to fix? At least two amateurs before me have worked on this machine, and so I'd like to see a good example of what it's supposed to look like on the inside. If you're up for it, I'm going to post a photo set of the parts of mine I'm suspecting. Similarly angled comparison shots would be lovely. I'll send cookies. :-)

sorry for the delay, I shot the pics this morning and will try to get them posted tomorrow. Tom
DeleteHey Jennifer, I can send pics direct if you email me at trc3@chrysler dot com

Hello, I need a part for the Fotomatic IV sewing machine. It's the part that goes underneath the needle which houses the bobbin/motor and the foot which holds the material down, can you help? thanks,
ReplyDeleteI think what you need is called the throat plate. This may be a real rarity. If the online retailers can't help then what I do is create a search on both Craigslist and EBay to notify me when something comes up. I think your only bet is to find a parts machine. Good luck
DeleteTry posting to the facebook group, vintage sewing machines.
ReplyDeleteI have been lucky enough to have obtained one of these beauties in Blue. The original cabinet while very cool looking was shot.
ReplyDeleteIt still runs but is missing a clutch? Are there any resources you could point me at to help me fix this issue?
PS.
ReplyDeleteI do have box of other original parts that came with the machine and would willingly talk trade. :) Feet, bobbins and a plate as well as other things I don't recognize...( help in ID'ing the same would be greatly appreciated)
I am looking for the needle plate for my Morse Fotomatic IV 4400. If you have one, I'll buy it!
DeleteHello, I'm looking for the clip that holds the face plate shut. It is held in place by two screws next to the light bulb assembly. If you have one, I'd buy it from you. If you need a pic, I have one, too. Thanks!
DeleteHi, my mother in law got one of this a few days ago, everything seems and works ok but she can't use the machine because there's a part under the machine close to the bobbing that is broken its the only "gear" part that is made out of some kind of hard plastic, anyone knows where I could get a replacement? thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteI just sold mine last week, I can maybe have a look if I can gain access to it.
DeleteThis is such a rare bird that I doubt that there are parts from any source other than another parts machine (which yours may have just become)
Sorry
FilmCriminal, I have the Morse Fotomatic 4400 with table and could part with it. Make offer at BlessedButterfly64@gmail.com
Deleteif there are any 4400 parts machines out there, let me know. the bobbin winder assembly is missing from mine.
ReplyDeleteIf you do find a parts source (or parts machine) please let me know. I'm looking for the needle plate for my Morse Fotomatic IV 4400.
Deleteoops forgot to include contact re: 4400. combsjmichael@gmail.com thx. peace to all beings
ReplyDeleteI just got a beauty of a Morse 4400, but I have a cracked cam. Any leads on where I can get a replacement?
ReplyDeleteMy contact email is ed.wehunt@gmail.com for the 4400 replacment cam
DeleteThese seem to be pretty rare right now, and no parts would be made for them so your only option is to find another one.
DeleteCreate a search on CL and EB and be patient
Good luck
Hola Tom, me puedes orientar dónde poder descargar el manual de usuario de Morse 4400, mil gracias.

Hey Jeanne. Can't help you but wanted to say been using my workhorse Morse 4400 since 1972. I'm in the process of selling it as it's served me well and owes me nothing. I know they're a good machine. Not sure of the value today though. So happy to see yours still serves you well
DeleteCan you help me thread my machine. I just got it.

ReplyDeleteI have a Morse Fotomatic IV Model 4400 which I purchased new in 1970. It has worked great with routine servicing.
ReplyDeleteSuddenly, the stitch length regulator froze in the zero position. The reverse button was also frozen. I took the machine in to my local sewing machine repair man,and he was able to get the reverse button working again. But he was unable to get the stitch length knob to rotate at all despite oiling, etc. Any suggestions as to what is causing this and how it might be repaired.
