It is very likely an early 50's machine. It has the same set-up (mechanisms) as the Singer 15-91 that is the thread take up and thread tension are on the front cover as apposed to facing the operator.
Do you need a color justification?
What a beautiful, simple little machine; a break away from the old styling and into the two-tone world. This little gem is in near new condition; the chrome is perfect, not a single spec of rust. It was used at least once but it is so pristine I found it hard to believe.
Yes I am a fan of the post war Japanese machines. I wonder if there is a following in Japan of vintage machine devotees? So if anyone out there can tell me more I am interested. MSD under a strange logo and model numbers 45-4123 * SM-4123A
And again it has a 1.5 amp motor. It's a straight stitch only machine.

So I have discovered the origin of the Coronado, it's a name badged Brother! There are also others badged as Wizard.
Now I'm looking for one like this; it has a retro-fit dial and push button; very modern!

Hello I have just been given the exact same machine and I am having some confusion with threading it and how to make any adjustments if you know or find any Information I could use some help also
ReplyDeleteHey Emily please email me at tboneart@comcast.net and I will walk you thru the threading. Tom
ReplyDeleteI need help threading my coronado princess
DeleteHi Tom,
ReplyDeleteAll machines in your collection are lovely, but I absolutely love your Coronado sewing machine, it is gorgeous!
Thanks I love machines of all kinds.
ReplyDeleteBy the way I have found a beautiful Necchi BU but it only has a free motion throat plate? Does anyone know how do you raise the feed dogs? which lever or button is it? I'm afraid to buy it because I don't understand?
Love your site too, I have found a 158.1040 on CL but without the case and extras I'm not sure its worth it?
Gosh I do not know. I have a diagram of one a Necchi 535 that has the drop feed button on the right lower side of the machine. Not sure if they would be any help but I could e-mail that one and 2 others that I have (BU Mira and a BF Mira - do not have a drop feed button per the diagrams).
ReplyDeleteAbout the 158.1040, not a rare machine but the case is a different story as I have never seen the rose embossed case for sale anywhere. :(
is there any way to find parts or this sewing machine?
ReplyDeleteHi, it depends greatly on which parts; so many of the Japanese machines had common elements. This is a simple machine and unlike so many of the Whites from Japan that were really just the same machine in a different casting.
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you need and maybe I can help find it.
Tom
Send pics!
I'm new to this site so not sure how to show u what mine looks like but from ur pics, there is no motor just a metal cover on the back
ReplyDeleteBeautiful machine! Love the color!
ReplyDeleteHey Vinnie, send your pics to tboneart@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteHello Tom. I just purchased the exact Coronado 45-4123 sewing machine as yours from Goodwill. She cost me all of $12.00. She is in really good condition, almost pristine. I found your blog while trying to find information on her. I am going to guess that she was manufactured in Japan circa the mid 50's. I am a sucker for those two tone sewing machines. Will try to take some pictures tomorrow if we have decent outside weather, sun always helps.
ReplyDeletethats the right price for not having to think too much!
DeleteI used it on several light weight leather projects and was allways happy, I never understood having a straight stich only machine but now I do.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE this machine!!!
ReplyDeleteTom, what is a fair price to pay for one of these machines? I own a thrift store and was approached today by someone wanting to sell a lot of stuff for one price. He had a beautiful black cast machine in this lot.
ReplyDeleteIt worked fine, looked great, and sat on what looked to be a cherry wood box that lifted up for storage, but wasn't in a cabinet.
I was given a coronado duchess, 45-4106, it came with the original price tag, receipt, diagrams and so forth, it's in almost new shape. The problem is the machine came with manual for model 45-4117, the instructions also have a handwritten note that it's for the model 4123. The threading diagrams are different enough to cause confusion, if you happen to come across a manual for 4106 please direct me in the direction. In the meantime I'd be happy to scan in the manual I received for the 45-4117.
ReplyDeleteSorry haven't seen a manual yet. It is such a cool little machine.
DeleteI just bought a Coronado Duchess SM5-4106A. It has the manual. Do you want a copy?
DeleteI know this is a bit late, but did you ever scan the manual for the 45-4117? Thanks!
DeleteSorry, never had one
DeleteSorry Tom, I was trying to respond to Jesse's post from 10/1/13.
DeleteHi Barb Mader, I just got the Coronado Duchess sm 4106C. It didn't come with a manual. Can you email a copy of yours to me, please?
DeleteAlso, I can't figure out how to put it into reverse. Help.

DeleteHello! I was just given a beautiful salmon colored Coronado. The model number on the front of the machine is M93Z but the motor is model 64205. It has no manual, the motor runs, but the belt is to old and shreded to be effective. Has anyone found a site to order manuals or parts for this machine?
ReplyDeleteSounds pretty cool!
DeleteFind a local sewing machine guy or even Joann's they will have a belt, bring the old one. Or OnLineSewingMachines or any of a dozen major web based suppliers.
Don't bother buying a zerox copied manual only the original is worth the money.
maybe I have almost exact the same but the darn, silk, normal is not on the base but on machine below the push reversion dail button including carry case ... if interesting let me know ... I just got it today and if the price is right ... it supposed to do thick leather as well, I may be wrong.
ReplyDeletesee my profile image of this sewing machine I mention.
DeleteI found out what it is now ...
DeleteIt is :
Brother Sewing Machine
Bradford
Model number : 7097
J- C1
Made in Japan
I have a very similar looking machine but mine is by stitchmaster. However I can not find any information on it and can not figure out how to thread it. Any way you can show me a picture of you threaded yours? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Samantha, some of the shots above show it pretty well, the Coronado is a Japanese clone of the Singer 15-91 and there is lots of info on them. se Ismacs http://www.ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/p15.html
ReplyDeleteI was given my great grandmothers sewing machines by my grandfather before he passed. She made hundreds of quilts on these from all the family's outgrown baby clothes. I have three of my own quilts still! I hadn't opened or really looked at the machines until today & thought I'd have no problem figuring them out - boy was I wrong!! One of them is the Coronado Duchess (beautiful machine) & I have no idea how to even thread the machine. :( Help?!?!?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know were these coranodo sewing machines can be bought from or the price for a new one or some more information about them?
ReplyDeleteHi Evan, they seem to be pretty rare out there. and info is scarce too.
DeleteI'm getting ready to sell off my collection and am going to be asking $75 for this little gem.
Tom
I just acquired a Coronado 4109A. Got it at our local GoodWill store for $15.
ReplyDeleteIt needs cleaning, and I blew the lint out of it, oiled it and it runs like Mach 5, with it hair on fire. It is creme and mint colored, had all of the feet AND the instructions book also. It straight stitches and zigzag and darns, I am a seamstress, and it is pretty heavy duty and can do denim and garment leather.
I was very impressed with it, it just needed cleaned, and oiled. Whoever got rid of it, was a fool.
If anyone has questions, you can email me at denimflyz@charter.net
Tom, if you sell your machine, I would put a price of around $150-250. They are very rare and I would not give it away.
ReplyDeleteI have this machine too. Are parts available for it? Mine needs a bobbin
ReplyDeleteThe bobbins are very common, try a couple of the standard sizes, many should work.
DeleteIf you are talking about the bobbin case it is also pretty common to dozens of Japanese machines.
I just acquired a machine exactly like yours Tom. Beautiful little machine. Trying now to figure out the bobbin as this is my first sewing machine. Thanks for posting the pics; they have helped me with threading.
ReplyDeleteI just bought a Coronado 45-4106B at Goodwill for $14! I have the manual and the plastic, cool retro carrying case. What I'd like to find out is what year was it made? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAs I could never pin-point my own I think that the trick would be to keep looking for others like it and hope to find a bill of sale with one of them (it happens)
DeleteBecause they were "name badged" (automotive term) and I don't even think the sellers wanted the customer to know they came from Japan at that time they seem to be hard to identify.
I am pretty certain they are Brother brand items so if we can find a look a like with the brother tag on it then we may have it.
Thank you! It does say Brother on it.
Deletei need to know how the tread and fill the the bobbin on this coronado precision 45-4118 s.m.5-4118a made in japan i have
ReplyDeletefarrenwadley@sbcglobal.net
Should be just like the Singer 15-91
DeleteThese are 15 class clones in a pretty dress(color) but there are no clones of a 15-91. No Japanese machines were ever built with a potted motor like a 15-91 has.
ReplyDeleteCoronado machines were badged for Gambles Dept. stores. Before 1954 they were built by National, after 1954 most Coronados were built by Brother.
I just got a Coronado 45-4167A. But Ned presser foot....any ideas where to start looking? Thanks. Kssantamom@yahoo.com
ReplyDeletethis is a very common low shank foot, however there are many options out there so if you can take it to a repair guy or a Joaans you can identify the correct fit
DeleteI will be picking up Coronado SM4133A from goodwill next week won it $23. Are they 15-91 clones or Not?
ReplyDeleteYes they are, the only diff is the great color and shape
DeleteBTW I was the $22 bidder, Ha
Haha, I was the $15 bidder. And do you know the entire reason I wanted that machine? (Aside from it's serious coolness factor ) because I've been tempted by your machine picture for lo, these many months, floating above the Japanese sewing machine Facebook group page, lol! It really is a gorgeous machine :-D
DeleteWell you are all set for life, I sold mine a couple of years ago and have been waiting for another all this time!
DeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI picked up my Coronado sewing machine from a goodwill same model as yours. I love the way it dose free motion sewing. I haven’t oiled it yet the cords are good but very old and they are attached to the case which is very warn. Did you rewire yours? It sews a real nice stitch though. All for $14. 😍
I didn't have to rewire but they are soo simple it is worth the effort to have a safe machine
DeleteI just aquired a beautiful Coronado 45-4114. Can't wait to try it out! I don't know what year it was purchased. It looks just like the one you have pictured.
ReplyDeleteI have a 45-4114 model do you know what size the rubber tire is for the bobbin winder? Mine is dry rotted and I need a replacement.
ReplyDeleteNowgfstcat@yahoo.com
Hi guys, my machine works fine but does not sew correctly. What I can do? Thank you very much if anyone knows about this.
ReplyDeleteI acquired a Coronado sewing machine at our church rummage sale but it was lacking the foot pedal. Any idea where I can get one?!
ReplyDeleteI have the almost same as your Coronado machine. Mine is a Coronado 45-4123.S.M.5-4123B. I have the original manual. I can't find another like it. I wish I could show a picture.
ReplyDeleteHi! Wonderful machine. I was looking for information of a Good Housekeeper model 830 and found your blog. My machine looks like your Coronado. The machine is in fine condition, the parts move smoothly. I just gave it a good cleaning, but when trying to sew it get stuck. I think that the problem is that I don’t know how to properly thread it. Any help will be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful..I was just given a Coronado duchess..I will look at it tomorrow
ReplyDeleteI sew on a Coronado green just like this. I’ve had a singer, one from mongomery wards, and this one is still the one I prefer to use.

ReplyDeleteI was just working on this model this week! Finally got it stitching nicely last night. Found I had to drop the needle just a smidge, to correct the skipped stitches. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to adjust the needle bar, so I don't have to mess with the needle. Belt needs replacing, but I put one that was close enough, to get her running. Will get a proper replacement soon.

ReplyDeleteI have the one and only Wizard in Turquoise that I can find on the net. It's a model 1350 and seems to be built by Brother. Running nice and free now. Next to test the stitching. Trying to find a place to post a pic of it!
ReplyDeleteWe have one like the one you are looking for,our one was made in the republic of Ireland and its brown and beige
ReplyDeleteI just bought a Brother yesterday almost exactly the same as the bottom one in your photos. The only difference I can see is that while the blue parts in your photo are the same blue in mine, the cream paint on yours is a medium green on mine. It's a wonderful machine, but it was frozen. It took me about 3 hours to get it to move and now it sews really well.
ReplyDeleteI have a question: Do you have any idea what year the one you're looking for was made? I have a booklet that came with mine, for a 1361 A, and there was a tag inside for a Brother heavy-duty custom machine. Looked very mid-1960s.
